In April 2001, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), through Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), established the first pilot CHP Regional Clean Energy Application Center (CEAC) in the Midwest. Based on this success, DOE has established seven additional CEACs, which promote and assist in transforming the market for combined heat and power, waste heat recovery, and district energy technologies and concepts thorughout the U.S. Key services include market assessments, education and outreach, and technical assistance.
