The University of Texas at Austin's world-class, on-site CHP plant and district energy system provide electricity (88 MW), chilled water (40,000 tons), and heating (over 1,000,000 lbs./hour) to 160 campus buildings. Over the past ten years, UT-Austin has implemented over $160 million in energy efficiency upgrades that have been funded out of savings from operating efficiency improvements. Over 8 million square feet of new building space on campus has been added in the same time, yet the increase in energy efficiency and environmental emission reductions CHP and district energy systems have resulted in a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions to 1977 levels. The University was one of six recipients of the Global District Energy Climate Award presented by the International Energy Agency at its November meeting in Copenhagen, Denmark. More information
